  • If you speak spanish you can clear customs by yourself in Pampatar. But it is generally quicker, easier and just as cost effective to do it through an agent. Juan Barro at Marina Juan can handle check-in and check-out for you, give him your papers by 9:00 and you should have them back after 17:00. In some cases it takes a day or two to process.

Do not change money from people who ask you on the street, not only is it dangerous, they most certainely will con you. There are lots of businesses who will gladly to change money for you. But be discreet, even though everyone does it (you will get a much better exchange rate) it is still illegal. If you want to stay on the legal side, there are safe ATM's at Sambil or you can go to one of the Cambio offices or to a bank (be ready to wait for a long time). Be prepared for a less than advantageous exchange rate. The current official exchange rate for the dollar is 2150 Bolivares and the blackmarket price is 5000 to 5500 (yes more than double, not a typo).
