- (June 10, 2007) - Because of political problems, many cruisers have opted to spend hurricane season elsewhere. Usually full marinas are now only partly full.
- See a map of safety areas
- Report any security problems to ONSA
- email [sar[at]onsa.org.ve] to activate a emergency communication net. This email alarms over 20 related organizations Caribbean wide and will open a MSAR mission on your call.
- The RESCUE CENTER COORDINATOR MAIQUETÍA [RCC-MIQ] that can be contacted by phone: +58 - 212 - 355 1518, 355 1920. Venezuelan COASTGUARD should be on VHF radio channel 16 and HF radio on frequency 2182.0 [no English speaking operator reported]. [edit] Money
June 20th 2007 official rate is 2150 bs per dollar due to a government foreing exchange control. There is also a black market exchange reaching 3800 bs per dollar. Is this and advantage or disadventage?? A big big advantage !! For foreigners no so good for Venezuelans. You will get a discount (+/- 40%) on every Item or service that you purchase or contract here in Venezuela . How does it work?? Well the key thing is that you purchase every thing in bs. I will illustrated, say you are buying a dinghy a 12 feet AB or Caribe cost around 9,000,000 bs / 2,150 official rate = 4186 U$D reasonable right? Now 9,000,000 bs /3800 black market exchange = 2,368 U$D GREAT DEAL!!! . This will apply to any thing that you pay for in bs, imported items are diferent you may still find them a bit cheaper but remember those items are purchase with dollars by the retailers and more likely at blackmarket price. Be advised that blackmarket is ilegal but everyone does it, be careful exchanging in the streets (false notes, scams and rip off) Any questions or advise on this matter feel free to contact Charlie Alpha www.charliealpha.com.ve 0412 8597070 or VHF 72

[edit] History
Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Ecuador and New Granada, which became Colombia). For most of the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and allowed for some social reforms. Democratically elected governments have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: a weakening of democratic institutions, political polarization, a politicized military, drug-related violence along the Colombian border, increasing internal drug consumption, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous peoples.
