These El Morro marinas and canal system has a Venice feel with bridges to dinghy under and houses on stilts.

  • Carlos "Charlie Alpha" facilitator in Puerto la Cruz will help you with all paperwork check in check outs, cruising permits, renewal of cruising permits and visas.   • Paperwork can be handled through an agent at Transpacific, located in Bahia Redonda Marina.
  • Venezuela Travel also can also help you coordinate your checkin documents. They will sell the stamps to you and make photocopies of your passports, boat papers, and previous checkout. You then need to take a taxi to Venezuela's new "combined" office which includes all the offices you need to checkin. This "combined" office is a new government idea (it took them a while) to try to make checkin procedures easier for travelers. Fees are 180k bs.

  • You must have a Venezuelan Courtesy Flag
  • Your Venezuelan Courtesy Flag must be in good condition, not ripped or full of holes.
  • You must carry your papers while in the dinghy these include:
    • Dinghy "Drivers" Certificate
    • Passport (or photocopy)
    • Cruising permits
    • Mother ship documentation papers
    • Receipt for the dinghy and outboard
  • You must have one life vest for each person in the dinghy
  • Speed limit is 5knots
  • You must have a light at night
  • Name should be on the dinghy
  • If stopped you should go see the Port Captain.

You locate the entrance to El Morro by looking for the bulbous needle like building near the Caribbean Mall then looking east for the entrance.

[edit] Anchoring & Mooring

If you arrive at night you can anchor outside of the canal until daylight. There is space for a couple boats between the entrance buoys and the Guardia National building as a more permanent location. Most marina's are mediterranean mooring either with your anchor or their mooring ball.

  • Cruisers hailing channel is 72.
  • Cruisers net is Monday - Saturday at 7:45am on VHF 72
  • If you are calling local you don't need to dial 081 ( this was the old area code now changed to 0281 ), you will get a wrong number if dialed. Unless you are dailing from a cell phone to a land line then you need to use the area code (0281).
  • When dailing from out side the country first dail international code usually 00 or 01 then country code 58 then city or cell phone prefix with out the cero 281 or 412 and then the number 00 58 412 859xxxx

[edit] Diesel/Gasoline/Propane/Water/Trash

  • You can get Diesel and Gasoline from the fuel dock located in the channel towards Bahia Redonda. DIESEL COSTS 8 CENTS (US) A GALLON - January 2005. As of October 2006 you cannot get diesel at the fuel dock. You need to go to Cumana or Isla Margarita for diesel. Gasoline can still be picked up at the fuel dock. The wall is high so they will send you down a pump to fill your dinghy jugs.
  • Propane runs are Monday and Thursdays at the mini mart in Bahia Redonda marina.

  • Unicasa Supermercados - Located in Plaza Mayor. Open 9am to 10pm. Tel: (0281)2819881; travel by dinghy from Bahia Redonda.
  • Makro - Large discount store with case lot prices. Also has a large pharmacy with good prices.
  • La Cava - Great butcher store located in Lecherias. They prepare your order while you wait or you can order it to have it frozen and pick it up later. Use taxi drivers to help you order.
  • Casa de la Cane - good liquor store with large selection at good prices. Near La Cava
  • Gourmezza - Specialty shop for fresh pasta, pasta sauces, and hand-made chocolates. Located in Lecherias.
  • Panaderia Plaza Major for bread
  • Panaderia Principal on Av Principal de Lecheria for best bread in town
  • Venicia's in Fiorca Mall for pastries

  • EPA - Is a large hardware store remeniscent of Home Depot. It is about a 15 minute walk from Plaza Mayor.
  • Inducstrial Developments - Industrial Safety store across from EPA stocks tons of leather and rubber gloves, tyvek worksuits and steal toe boots.
  • Robert Gonzalez Oriente - small shop with good prices for what they have. Geared more for commerical boaters.
  • Auto Boat Center - Good selection but more pricey. Carry brass fittings

You can get pretty much anything done here, including major boat overhauls for a very decent price. Just try to bring in any specialized materials you may need.

The Conferry is a huge ferry that takes passengers and cars to Isla Margarita twice a day. Phone: 0501-26633779. There are two classes: VIP and First Class. VIP get's you food/drink service on the top level of the fast ferry, along with reclining seats, some with tables. Fast ferry get's you to Isla Margarita in 2 hours while the regular ferry get's you there in 6. As of 2006 prices are 60,000bs for VIP and 40,000bs for First Class each way. Depending on the season you may have to stay in line for hours to get tickets a couple days before you leave. If you have kids with a different last name you will need to prove they are yours with proper documentation. A passport copy of all intended passengers is needed before tickets are issued. It is possible to go to one of the many ferry offices to get and change tickets instead of the main terminal.

[edit] Fundamigos

The non-profit Fundamigos group performs yearly surgical missions for children with cleft palates, burns, skin cancer and other medical problems. Organized by Doctora Ana de Manyon, these missions benefit over 200 under-privileged patients yearly. Volunteers are needed to care for the children before and after surgery, prepare snacks for other volunteers or help in the operating room. Training is provided, anyone over 18 is welcome. Inquire with Ann at the Mini-Mart in Bahia Redonda.

Always lock up your boat (even at night) especially at marina's like Americo Vespucio. People have been known to sneak around at night and steal things out of hatches and even stealthly enter boats to take laptops. Do not walk through the barrios (slums).

Cruisers should make sure they have their Yellow Fever and Measles shots up to date. People flying back to the US or Europe are required to have their vaccinations current. Kayla at Transpacific (office #2 at Bahia Redonda) can arrange for a doctor to come and give the shots in her office. The shots are free and can also be given at the Port Captain's near the Ferry Building.
