Welcome to CaptainWiki, the Cruising Guide that anyone can edit.

Launched March 1st, 2006, CaptainWiki is in its genesis stage. The content of CaptainWiki is intended to be written collaboratively by cruisers from all around the world. This website is a wiki, which means that anyone with access to an Internet-connected computer can edit, correct, or update the information.

You do not need to fear accidentally damaging the CaptainWiki site when you add or improve information, as other CaptainWikis are always around to advise or correct obvious errors if needed, and the CaptainWiki site software, known as Mediawiki, is carefully designed to allow easy reversal of editorial mistakes.

Because CaptainWiki is an ongoing work to which anybody can contribute, it differs from a paper-based reference source in some very important ways. Cruisers can make sure the contents on destinations are always accurate and up-to-date. Many cruisers in the near future will come to this site to acquire knowledge. We need cruisers today to share their knowledge and create content. The hope of any contributor is to provide useful and accurate information to others, and this project is here to help coordinate efforts.

CaptainWiki is hoping to be multilingual very soon.

Contributing to CaptainWiki

The structure is in place for many great articles and information on everything, but since CaptainWiki is still in its infancy stage, a lot of these pages still need content. Follow red links to contribute the needed information and share your knowledge about various destinations or subjects. Feel free to add links for anything you would like to talk about and can not find. You can add to or update already existing content simply by clicking the edit tab at the top of the page or on the [edit] link next to the section you want to edit. All MediaWikis support the same editing tools and you should check out this tutorial to help you out before you start contributing.

About CaptainWiki

CaptainWiki history

While cruising to Isla Margarita on their ketch Valkyrie in September 2005, Ben Walsh and Christine Pensivy were looking for safety information about Venezuela but could only find data 2 to 3 years old. Ben, a former San Francisco Computer Programmer, came up with the idea for an easy to edit Wiki-style website for cruisers to post or read about the latest attack reports. The idea quickly expanded from sharing security issues to creating a destination guide where cruisers could tell their fellow cruisers about their favorite hang out, share with them their favorite anchorage, rate the newest chandlery, or go through the latest custom procedures.

CaptainWiki is starting as a limitless structure where cruisers can share and edit all kinds of helpful information. From island exploring, bay navigation, and passage stories to checklists, tips, and anything and everything concerning the cruising lifestyle. CaptainWiki.com will be written from many salty Captains’ personal experiences and shared with you. Friends, family and aspiring cruisers can join in your Cruising adventures with the free boat positioning reporting map and your own personal travel blog.

The structure is in place and CaptainWiki is thirsty for information. So now it is up to you, the cruiser, to fill in the blanks.

Behind CaptainWiki

CaptainWiki uses the Mediawiki software. It's an open-source program that is used on all Wikimedia projects.

Feedback and questions

CaptainWiki itself is run as a communal effort. It is a community project whose end result will be the ultimate cruising guide and resource for the cruising lifestyle. Feedback about content should be raised on the discussion pages of those articles. You are invited to be bold and edit the pages yourself to add information or correct mistakes if you are knowledgable and able to do so.
